History of Kayapo Indians
- In 1900, the Kayapo population was about 4,000 people. Due to deforestation and mining, by the late 1970s the population got as low as 1,300.
- In the 1980s and 90s, led by powerful chiefs, the Kayapo fought back, even killing people if they had the nerve to trespass.
- In 1988, chiefs started learning Portuguese to get their rights into the new Brazilian Constitution.
- In 1989, they protested the plans of a new dam that was to be built on their river.
